Attendance Policy

St Columb Major Academy aims to promote, among parents, carers and

children, a high level of awareness of the need for regular and prompt

All children are expected to arrive at school on time. Government guidelines require us to record absence and late arrivals. (National average attendance is 96%). It is very important that we demonstrate a commitment in ensuring good attendance.  Please ensure that we are provided with a valid reason for any absence or lateness.  All absences from school must be explained on the day by phone, or via the attendance class dojo app.

The school should be informed of all absences by 8.45am – the school will then authorise absences that are due to sickness.

The school registers are closed at 8.55am each morning.

Attend and Achieve!
If a school can improve attendance by 1%, they will see a 5-6% improvement in attainment.
Term-time holiday The Education (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2006 previously allowed Headteachers to grant leave of absence for the purpose of a family holiday during term time in ‘special circumstances’ of up to ten school days leave per year. Headteachers could also grant extended leave for more than ten school days in ‘exceptional circumstances’. Amendments to the 2006 regulations have removed the references to family holiday and extended leave as well as the statutory threshold of ten school days. The amendments make clear that Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are ‘exceptional circumstances’. Headteachers should determine the number of school days a child can be away from school if the leave is granted.
Warning If you take your child out of school without permission you will be committing an offence under the Education Act 1996. We may refer the matter to the Education Welfare Service who may decide to prosecute. This may result in a fine of up to £2,500, a prison sentence of up to three months or both. Please note if the school refuses your request and the child is still taken out of school, this will be recorded as an unauthorised absence and this may make you liable to a Penalty Notice for each child, payable by each parent/carer.
